[62] COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT December 9, 1943 The Community Activities Department of the Athletic Division’s personnel at present is composed of 13 members, including 10 in the men’s department and 3 in the women’s department. The office staff consists of 2 persons; the director and secretary-clerk. The field staff consists of Assistant Director of Men’s Division plus 8 persons; including Property Custodian, Maintenance, Assistant Playground Supervisor and Athletic Instructors. The women’s department consists of Assistant Director and 2 Athletic Instructress. The major athletic program now underway are tackle football, touch football, volleyball, table tennis and horseshoe. At present, touch football seems to be gaining interest among the Jr. boys. The future program calls for organization of district table tennis league, holding of block and district tournament as well as preparing for the opening of the basketball season both in Jr., Sr. men’s and women’s division. Co-ordinating with the Education Department, the Athletic Department just complete for basketball courts with the main playground (Field #1) and two additional basketball courts (Field #2) will soon be put up. Aside from performing general duties within the athletic department, the general staff members whenever their time is available has been assigned to give assistance to various other departments of the Community Activities. The women’s staff has been active in lending assistance to the Clubs and Organizations Division as well as to the Engeibu of the Community Entertainment Division. The women’s Assistant Director, also, supervises, at present, the Athletic program for the Rohwer Girl Scouts. In the men’s department beginning December 6, on account of the winter fuel problem, an average of three persons from the staff of nine has been assigned to their respective blocks to assist in cutting fire wood as well as going into the forest to relieve the shortage of lumberjacks. The property custodian and the maintenance assistance, aside from their duties of athletic instructors and custodians, are now helping out as carpenters making various stage props for the Center Talent shows and also for the education department by making various athletic equipment used in the playground. Under the present condition the department is lending assistance to other department within the Community Activities when the necessity demands with the understanding and coordinating of the department directors. It is also expected for the ensuing tow or three months we are assigning the men’s staff to give every assistance possible to help out with the wood shortage situation. This will take each individual member of the staff one or two days each week for lumberjacking and half-day to a day to cut wood in their respective blocks.
