Click the button below to download a ~500mb installer, allowing you to view and explore a digital reconstruction of a single barrack block in the Rohwer Internment Camp. The visualization portrays block 12 as it could have appeared in the summer of 1944, during the camp’s peak period of occupation. Although sufficient documentation does not exist to reconstruct any one block, by combining hundreds of photographs and historic documents from the entire camp, an accurate depiction of a typical block is possible. The reconstruction was created with the objective of illustrating how the Japanese-American internees adapted and transformed the barren living spaces, making the best out of extremely difficult conditions forced upon them.
This visualization utilizes a video game environment and requires a powerful computer to view at the highest graphics quality. If the visualization fails to play, or performance appears to be suffering, try selecting a lower graphics quality setting.
